Mercari is a Japanese e-commerce company and peer-to-peer marketplace app founded in 2013 by Shintaro Yamada, Tommy Tomishima, and Ryo Ishizuka. The platform expanded to the United States in 2014 with offices in California, offering a digital space for individuals to buy and sell new and used goods, including home furniture.
Because the platform relies entirely on user-generated listings, the available inventory spans many styles and price points. Shoppers can find budget-friendly pieces from mass-market names like IKEA and Ashley Furniture alongside premium resale items from labels like West Elm, Joybird, and Pottery Barn. Pricing is set by individual sellers, meaning a used leather sofa might list for $100 as a local pickup or exceed $1,000 for a designer brand in excellent condition.
Mercari does not manufacture its own furniture. The company tracks the environmental effects of its resale model through an annual Impact Report, calculating the greenhouse gas emissions avoided by keeping usable goods out of landfills.
